Board approves reduced-scope additions at 2608 Granada Boulevard; board asks to retain historic iron doors if possible

The Historic Preservation Board approved a reduced-scope application for additions and site work at 2608 Granada Boulevard, a locally designated Art Deco landmark sited near the DeSoto Fountain and the Biltmore.

Architect Callan Gibb described the current submission as a pared-down version of previously approved work: the proposal encloses the terrace above an open porch to create a new master bathroom and adds modest interior changes, leaving the overall footprint largely unchanged. Gibb said prior approvals for more extensive work had been granted in earlier years; the current application removes the larger guest-house element and retains a setback roofline so the addition remains subordinate to the historic massing.

Staff recommended conditions including replacement of two non-original rear French doors with a product that matches previously replaced doors and review of a relocated side gate and pavers. The board debated a staff condition regarding existing historic iron doors and screens on a second-floor terrace. A motion was made to approve the COA with standard conditions but to strike staff condition number 3 so the existing iron doors and screens could be retained and restored; board members also asked staff and the applicant to attempt to reuse the historic ironwork elsewhere on the property if it could not remain in place. The motion passed by roll call; board members commended the applicant and reiterated interest in salvaging historic material where feasible.
