Alabama House Rules Committee adopts post calendar, prioritizes remaining sunset bills

The Alabama House Rules Committee at its meeting adopted a post calendar and agreed to prioritize five remaining "sunset" bills, the committee chair said, moving a slate of House bills forward by committee agreement and a voice vote.

The decision matters because the post calendar sets which bills the committee releases to the House floor; committee leaders said they would sacrifice member picks so the five sunset bills can be considered quickly. Representative Randy Wood moved to adopt the proposed calendar; Representative Faulkner seconded the motion. Committee members voiced approval and the motion was adopted by voice vote.

Committee leaders said Chairwoman Wilcox has worked through the committee's sunset bills and had all but one complete, with that remaining item expected to finish next week. The chair and the Speaker agreed to give up their picks so those sunset bills would move out of the way; one of the sunset items was described as carried by Chairman Shedd. Committee members counted roughly 21 bills before Representative Shaver's addition, which raised the list to 22; after selecting the five sunset bills, members said 17 bills remained on the pick list for members to select from.

The post calendar read into the record included the following House bills: House Bill 102; House Bill 230; House Bill 114; House Bill 110; House Bill 115; House Bill 116; House Bill 125; House Bill 89; House Bill 196; House Bill 168; House Bill 52; House Bill 191; House Bill 45; House Bill 156; House Bill 79; House Bill 161; House Bill 190; House Bill 72; and House Bill 27. After a member request, the committee allowed Representative Stringer’s pick to be added at the end of the calendar as House Bill 243.

Members agreed to meet at adjournment to set the calendar for Tuesday. No roll-call vote counts were recorded in the transcript; the calendar was adopted following a voice vote.
