Board hears plan to move district data center and reroute fiber to new Rock building

Rockcastle County Schools staff told the board they plan to relocate the district’s primary data center to a recently acquired building (referred to as the Rock building) and to re-route district fiber to that location.
An IT speaker identified as Trent said the district “owns our own fiber” with roughly 28 miles across the district and that the Rock building already contains a data center-ready space, including a raised floor. “We’re gonna move our main data center from here to that building,” Trent said, describing a multi-step plan to run fiber from a nearby pole to the new building and to bring state fiber into the site as well. The district plans to stage equipment so the state’s incoming connection is available before moving district racks.
District staff said they were aiming for a late-June migration date (the presenter mentioned a target around June 26) that would likely require about two weekdays plus a weekend during which internet and phone service might be unavailable. The speaker described fiber splicing and rack moves as the most technically complex steps and said the team would work with state vendors and a contracted fiber company to limit the outage window.
Why it matters: Moving the district’s main data center and reorganizing fiber routes affects daily operations across schools and offices. Staff told the board they intend to minimize disruption by targeting a low-activity period and staging equipment ahead of the cutover.
