House approves measure requiring Medicaid coverage for noninvasive colorectal screening tests

The Alabama House adopted HB45, a bill that requires Medicaid to cover any noninvasive colorectal screening test recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. Supporters said other large payers — including Medicare and multiple state Medicaid programs — already cover these tests. Representative Oliver noted that comparable states’ Medicaid programs spend comparatively small amounts on the tests while using them to avoid costlier procedures later.
Chairman Reynolds offered a sunset amendment on a related Medicaid bill during floor debate on other measures; for HB45, members discussed program costs and confirmed the policy is limited to Medicaid beneficiaries. Representative Moore asked whether the measure extends coverage only to people already on Medicaid, and Representative Oliver confirmed the coverage applies to Medicaid enrollees and does not expand eligibility.
The House approved the BR and final passage by recorded votes. Sponsors described the step as a preventive care change intended to increase screening and potentially lower downstream costs for advanced colorectal disease.
