Emergency management seeks FEMA approval for hazard-mitigation plan and readies wildfire-defense outreach

Grant County’s emergency manager reported that the county’s updated hazard-mitigation plan was submitted to the state on Feb. 3 and is available on the county website for the required two-week public comment period before the state forwards it to FEMA for final approval.
Why it matters: A FEMA-approved hazard-mitigation plan makes projects eligible for federal mitigation funding including BRIC and FEMA mitigation grants. The manager estimated FEMA approval could follow by April or early May; the commission will need to adopt the plan after FEMA approval.
The manager also said the county has executed a subaward agreement under the Community Wildfire Defense Grant to update the Community Wildfire Protection Plan and plans public outreach and printed materials focused on the Ready-Set-Go wildfire-preparedness framework. He said federal procurement holds created a brief pause in some grant timelines but that DHS contacts expect resolution in the next one to two weeks.
Commissioners asked about outreach and timeline; the manager said the county will proceed with procurement and vendor selection and begin outreach materials development once the procurement process is complete.
