Commissioners send project list to Santa Fe MPO, add NM 592 to priorities

Santa Fe County commissioners approved a resolution submitting a list of recommended transportation projects to the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for inclusion in the 2025'050 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), and agreed to add New Mexico Highway 592 to the list for MPO consideration.

Brett Clavio of county planning presented the Transportation Advisory Committee—9s recommended project list. The MPO planning area covers roughly 25% of the county land area but includes about 80% of its population and 90% of employment; inclusion in the MTP can make a project eligible for federal funding without creating an automatic local funding obligation. County staff and the TAC prioritized safety projects shaded in the packet and recommended retaining regionally significant projects from the prior MTP.

Commissioner Justin Green moved to approve the submission and asked that NM 592 be added to the list; Commissioner Hank Hughes seconded and staff confirmed adding the state highway to the county's MPO submission is appropriate. The resolution passed unanimously.

Why this matters: Inclusion in the MPO MTP flags county-prioritized projects as eligible for federal and state transportation funding, and will shape project priorities through 2050. The board—9s addition of NM 592 indicates interest in pursuing state and federal coordination to advance a bike-lane/widening project.
