Needham working group advances plans for gates and channelization at downtown rail crossings

Consultants and town staff on Feb. 12 presented a package of safety concepts for five railroad crossings in the Town of Needham and scheduled diagnostic meetings with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Keolis and state agencies to refine design and cost estimates.
The proposal calls for installing four‑quadrant gate systems at West Street, May Street and Oak Street and for channelization at Rosemary Street and Great Plains Avenue. Consultants said those locations were identified after reviewing prior reports including studies from 2013, 2015 and a 2024 feasibility analysis.
Town leaders and consultants said the major questions going forward are how much additional MBTA or private property will be required to accommodate pedestrian emergency escape routes, how the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) guidance will be interpreted by regulators, and who will pay for ongoing maintenance.
