Needham committee hears Urban SDK traffic-data demo; delays subscription decision while approving several TSC purchases

Representatives of Urban SDK gave the Transportation Safety Committee a 15-minute demonstration of a traffic-data platform that uses aggregated connected-vehicle and telematics data to provide speed, volume and safety risk layers for every roadway link in a jurisdiction.
Micah Dickman, vice president of revenue at Urban SDK, described the data source as aggregated OEM and mobility-provider telematics (federally validated sources used by state DOTs), explained calibration to permanent count stations and said the company can produce daily and hourly metrics, collision-index layers and public-shareable reports.
Committee members asked technical questions about the data source, penetration rate and calibration to ground-truth counts. Urban SDK representatives said they ingest anonymized OEM and enabled-device feeds (they referenced a third-party aggregator) and that typical penetration for producing reliable measures ranges into the tens of percent of vehicles on a given road; the company reported calibration routines tied to state and local count stations.
The company quoted a subscription price of roughly $26,000 per year; committee members said the figure could be negotiated and asked for local reference contacts from Massachusetts agencies that already use the platform.
Committee members generally saw value in townwide, continuous data for triage and planning, but several said they preferred to pilot the tool and obtain sample reports based on Needham data before committing to the subscription. Staff agreed to pursue sample reports and reference checks; the subscription decision was deferred.
Later the committee returned to budget items from the TSC expense account and voted to approve a set of capital and operational items shown in the meeting packet (portable speed radars, an intersection feasibility study, and related repairs and replacements) totaling roughly $72,000; the committee explicitly excluded the Urban SDK subscription from that approval and asked staff to continue negotiations on price and a pilot year.
Why it matters: Continuous, calibrated mobility data can let staff and police target enforcement and capital investments more efficiently than limited spot counts, but the subscription cost and the need for local validation led the committee to request a pilot and sample reports prior to procurement.
