The Pico Rivera City Council voted unanimously on Feb. 11 to approve a letter of interest with the United Soccer League as the city explores stadium-anchored redevelopment as part of its Pico Rivera 2035 revitalization program.
Council members heard a presentation from Dan Holman, chief operating officer of the United Soccer League, who described USL’s national footprint and its interest in stadium-anchored, multiuse projects. Holman said USL seeks “community-driven” partners and emphasized youth-to-professional pathways, women’s programming and multipurpose stadium uses such as concerts and community events.
City staff introduced the item and said it is part of broader efforts to position Pico Rivera as a destination and support future transit and economic opportunities. The council discussed potential benefits including job creation, youth-program pathways and an entertainment anchor for downtown revitalization. Council members thanked staff for outreach and noted the city’s transportation links and future mobility projects as potential advantages.
Council member Laura moved the staff recommendation to approve the letter of interest; the motion was seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Camacho. The motion carried on a 5-0 roll call (Council member Laura; Council member Eric Lutz; Dr. Monica Sanchez; Mayor Pro Tem Camacho; Mayor Garcia).
Council and staff repeatedly emphasized that sites are under study and no site was finalized. The USL presenter and city staff said feasibility work and community engagement would be required; no development agreement, budget commitment or site selection was adopted during the meeting.
Votes at a glance: Approval of letter of interest with United Soccer League — moved by Mayor Pro Tem Camacho (per council floor action), seconded by Council member Laura; outcome: approved, 5-0.
What happens next: Staff and USL will continue exploratory work, including site identification and feasibility; staff said no final project or commitment was authorized on Feb. 11.
