Pico Rivera adopts Climate Action Plan; council discusses air-quality outreach during fires

On Jan. 28 the Pico Rivera City Council adopted the city’s Climate Action Plan and related negative declaration (non-CIP No. 6770) after staff recommended formal adoption.
Councilmember Mayor Pro Tem Camacho moved to approve the plan, seconded by Councilmember Laura; the roll call vote was 5-0.
During discussion, Councilmember Dr. Sanchez asked how the city informs residents about high particulate levels related to regional fires. City staff said the city used social media and followed Air Quality Management District (AQMD) notifications during recent fires, and that staff closed some park facilities out of caution to protect employees and residents. The city manager told councilmembers the Climate Action Plan will allow the city to pursue grants and programs — for example, targeted assistance such as HEPA air purifiers — to reduce residents’ exposure to particulate pollution in the future.
Staff also said adopting the plan will allow Pico Rivera to leverage the document in grant applications and to align future development and projects with emissions-reduction goals. At the meeting staff noted the city will be among the first in the region to adopt a community Climate Action Plan, which could strengthen grant competitiveness.
The motion to adopt passed 5-0 with Councilmembers Laura, Lutz, Dr. Sanchez, Mayor Pro Tem Camacho and Mayor Garcia voting yes. No amendments were made at the hearing.
