City council approves $161,994 weed‑abatement billing, authorizes charges to property owners

The City Council unanimously approved the 2024 weed‑abatement report Tuesday and authorized staff to add abatement charges to the county roll for affected properties.
Adam Matamian, the community development director, told council the 2024 program cost $161,994 and that the majority of the expense stemmed from clearing city‑owned parcels. The city mailed notices to more than 500 private vacant‑lot owners; 31 lots required contractor clearing after owners did not comply.
Matamian asked council to waive city notification costs for owners who complied and to authorize the weed‑abatement contract administrator to record the expenses against noncompliant parcels. After no public comment, councilmembers moved, seconded and voted unanimously to approve the staff recommendation.
Council did not amend the report at Tuesday’s hearing; staff will proceed with billing and lien procedures described in the report.
