CJCC hears update on youth diversion and truancy specialist hiring and program rollout

The Sawyer County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council received an update on youth justice and truancy programming at its Jan. 25 meeting, including a hiring step expected to enable early interventions for school‑age children.
A staff member reported that the county interviewed candidates and has “made an offer to a youth diversion and truancy specialist,” with hopes the new hire will be in place and the program operational within a few weeks. The program is designed to work primarily with 10‑ to 16‑year‑olds but the presenter said additional grant funding may allow services for some younger children with truancy issues, including a case currently being considered for Lac Courte Oreilles schools.
The presenter said the funding package for the program includes two state grants and one fully federal grant that are still completing administrative steps. The county is also coordinating with Sirona Recovery (a JusticePoint affiliate) for staffing assistance under the grant. Staff said they will monitor grant approvals and report back to the council.
No formal action was taken; members were asked to note the hiring progress and the program timeline.
