Andrew T. Kawano, director designate, told the committee the administration supports the renewal because the city has no alternative use planned for most of the parcel and the continued tenancy provides maintenance, security and public services. "Continuing the tenancy of Camp Mokoleia helps to provide maintenance, security and provide services to the public," he said.
Daryl Whitaker, executive director of Camp Mokoleia, said the organization has leased the parcel for about 40 years and uses six acres for public camping, outdoor education and summer camp programs. Whitaker said moving a beach access point by about 1,000 feet would free about five additional acres for public camping to address a local shortage of camping sites.
The committee moved the resolution to the posted CD1 and reported it out for adoption without recorded roll-call votes at the committee level.
