The Smyrna Town Council adopted an amendment to the town sign ordinance that clarifies and tightens limits on neon and LED rope lighting in non‑residential districts.
Jeff (planning staff) presented language that narrows where bands of neon or fluorescent lights and LED rope lighting may be used, restricting them to accenting rooflines and specifically prohibiting bands of neon or fluorescent lights in windows “irrespective of the presence or absence of a sign.” The amendment allows temporary holiday LED rope lighting in commercial windows as an exception.
The item was the subject of prior discussion at the planning commission and council; no members of the public spoke for or against at the council public hearing. The council moved and passed the ordinance amendment.
Council members noted one nearby property (a Nissan facility) that might fall under the ordinance and asked staff to review that property’s compliance under the amended language.
The ordinance change will be added to the town’s sign regulations for non‑residential districts and will be enforced through the town’s normal code‑compliance processes.
