The Hinsdale Plan Commission on Wednesday, Feb. 12, approved five sign-permit reviews affecting downtown storefronts.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the following applications: case A-1-2025 (102 South Washington Street, Studio W — installation of one projecting sign and a permanent window sign); case A-3-2025 (5 West Second Street — two tenant wall panels for Hinsdale Dental Journey and Studio Giuseppe); case A-6-2025 (12 Grama Square — one wall sign for Coastal Bay Seafoods); case A-4-2025 (8 East Hinsdale Avenue — permanent window decals for the Don McKenna Group and removal of a Coldwell Banker awning logo to remain within the district’s 25-square-foot allowance); and case A-5-2025 (14 West Hinsdale Avenue, Unit 1 — Guaranteed Rate corporate logo updates for a blade sign and a wall sign).
Most applicants were represented in person. Marlene Crick, owner of Signs Now in Downers Grove, told commissioners she was representing both Hinsdale Dental Journey and Studio Giuseppe and described the proposed panels as “pan face non illuminated” with digital prints for both tenants. An applicant for Studio W said of the new signs, “I think that the signage will be really tasteful and beautiful,” and noted the back blade sign would be reattached to the building rather than the post for safety.
Discussion on several applications focused on minor design and compliance issues rather than denials. For Coastal Bay Seafoods the applicant (Aurora Sign Company) described halo-illuminated letters on a pan-face backer and said the two-line text was intended to make clear the tenant is a seafood market; commissioners asked about LED color/temperature and were told the exact temperature would be provided to staff after the meeting and that a timer would be installed to control illumination. For the Coldwell Banker/Don McKenna Group application staff and the applicant confirmed the awning nameplate would be removed and that the package keeps the site within the 25-square-foot district allowance; the applicant said the Don McKenna Group is considering other office locations and additional permits may follow.
All five items passed on roll-call votes. Motions and seconds were recorded for several applications; where the transcript did not clearly name a mover or seconder, the commission nonetheless recorded unanimous “aye” votes. Bethany, a staff member, administered the roll calls and recorded the ayes.
The commission closed the meeting after approving the final sign permit and a short adjournment motion.
