Board approves cosmetology students’ four-day trip to American Beauty Show in Chicago

The Southgate Community School District Board of Education approved a proposal for two Anderson High School seniors to attend the American Beauty Show in Chicago April 4–7 as part of a Career and Technical Education (CTE) cosmetology partnership.
The presentation, delivered by Mark Hansen, Assistant Principal and CTE Director at South Gaines Anderson High School, said the students were selected through the district’s Riverview cosmetology program and would travel by train from Dearborn and stay at the Comfort Suites adjacent to the convention center. "This event is no cost to Southgate schools, and the students will be chaperoned by their teachers," Hansen said. He identified the chaperones as Miss Fredericks and Mrs. Brooks from Riverview.
Hansen told the board the conference offers classes on salon ownership, skincare, makeup, hairstyling and nails, and includes student competitions in nail styling and barber skills. Board members asked whether the conference is annual and whether it creates career or job opportunities; Hansen said the conference is annual and that it primarily provides networking with industry professionals rather than guaranteed job placements. Board members also asked about fundraising; Hansen said the DCTC partnership covers some costs but students also do fundraising for additional small costs.
A motion to approve the CTE cosmetology trip was made by Dr. Pomponio and supported by Mr. Sage; the board voted in favor. No vote tally by name was recorded on the transcript.
The board did not identify any district cost for the trip; Hansen said parents would take students to the train station. The chaperones and program affiliation were specified in the presentation.
