Board reviews proposed student-calendar changes: one-day shift for 2025–26, 2026–27 calendar modeled on 2019–20

District staff presented two student-calendar proposals Feb. 11 that will return to the board for action after further review.
The first is a requested single-day revision to the 2025–26 calendar recommended by the LEA–LPS joint calendar committee: begin the school year Tuesday, Aug. 12, rather than Monday, Aug. 11. Superintendent and committee members said the change is intended to smooth the start of the fall semester; the proposed modification shifts the end of the first quarter so the quarter would conclude Friday, Oct. 10. Elementary principals suggested using the staggered first day to give kindergartners, sixth-graders and ninth-graders a full first day dedicated to orientation activities, the presentation said.
District administrators clarified that the planned first day structure for that year would have kindergarten, sixth and ninth grades attending the first day, with all grades beginning full schedules the following day.
Staff also presented a proposed 2026–27 calendar modeled on the 2019–20 calendar. That draft would begin Wednesday, Aug. 12, place semester 1 ending Dec. 22, and set last student day May 20. Administrators said the joint calendar committee — which includes principal, teacher, LEA and HR representation as required in the negotiated agreement — deliberated on multiple start-date options and that tradeoffs are inherent in calendar construction. The committee recommended the 2026–27 draft after testing several scenarios and collecting input from parent and teacher advisory groups.
Both items were presented for first reading and will return to the board for action at a future meeting; no board vote was taken on either calendar at the Feb. 11 meeting.
