Commission approves Verizon drawings for Tower 2; discusses lighting opposite side

The Cottage Grove Utility Commission on Feb. 12 approved Verizon’s construction drawings for equipment on Tower 2, with staff recommendations to relocate visible cabling to the tower face with more tree screening.
Utility Department staff described that Verizon’s original drawings routed cabling on the west side of Tower 2, which is visible to traffic on County Highway N, and said they requested moving the cabling to the opposite side of the tower where tree cover reduces visibility. "I requested that the cabling be put on the other side of the tower where it's a little less visible because of all the tree lines," Utility Department staff said during the meeting. The commission voted to approve the drawings with that recommendation.
Commissioners also reopened a prior discussion about lighting the other side of the water tower that faces the Madison approach. The chair noted the village lit one side of the tower in 2018 and said that installation cost about $3,800 then; he said current costs are likely higher and that staff had not yet solicited updated estimates. "In 2018, it cost $3,800 to do it. Of course, it'll probably be double that now," the chair said.
Commissioners asked staff to solicit price estimates from the contractor who did the previous work and to report back on potential funding sources beyond the water or tower maintenance fund. One commissioner asked for a visual rendition because mature trees on the Madison side may reduce the tower's visibility from that approach.
Staff will return with final Verizon drawings confirming cable placement and with cost estimates and possible funding sources for lighting at a future meeting.
