The Advisory Commission on Policing agreed on March 3 to hold a virtual public forum on consent searches on Monday, March 10, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and commissioners endorsed outreach, registration and a panel of invited speakers that includes the chief of police (or a designee), council leaders and the state's attorney’s office.
Susan (communications lead) and Logan (communications staff) reported the press release is drafted and undergoing edits; the commission asked that it be distributed in mid‑March with a Zoom registration link and an option for the public to submit questions in advance. The forum will be livestreamed to Facebook and take written questions via Zoom Q&A; staff said they will monitor Facebook comments and may group and forward similar advance questions to panelists.
Invites are in process: Council Vice President Giwondo, Council Public Safety Chair Katz and Chief Yamada have been asked to participate; Assistant Chief Darren Frank was named as a likely alternate if the chief is unavailable. Commissioners also asked Susan to invite the county state's attorney and allow the state's attorney to designate a representative if a primary officeholder is unavailable.
Commissioners discussed logistics including whether to accept live questions via Facebook comments, capacity limits on Zoom webinars (staff noted a 300-seat cap on their license but said larger webinar licenses are available), the availability of a webinar Q&A and a post‑forum feedback mechanism. Staff proposed directing attendees to the ACP website for follow‑up comments and said a post‑event survey could be distributed by email to registrants; the commission asked that draft survey questions be approved in advance.
The commission also agreed that the March forum will be virtual and that a future forum will be held in person; the virtual forum will include a brief panel overview of consent search policy and an extended Q&A with public participants.
