Superintendent highlights Special Olympics, LEAP Connect pathway work and state reading gains

Superintendent Miss Bocek used her Feb. 11 General Committee remarks to highlight district events, partnerships and ongoing initiatives, including Special Olympics planning, workforce pathway work for students with significant disabilities and an NFL executive visit to students.
Bocek said an NFL executive, who has supported the district since Katrina-era fundraising tied to the private school St. Bernard’s in New York, spent more than an hour with about 100 students discussing careers in sports management and related fields. "He stayed an hour and a half. He met with about a hundred of our kids," she said.
She reminded the board of a meeting with Nunez Community College to develop pathways for LEAP Connect students (students with significant disabilities) and to seek recognition from the Workforce Investment Commission. The goal is to create post-graduation pathways appropriate to those students’ employment potential. Bocek also announced the Special Olympics will be held Friday, March 21, at Chalmette High School stadium starting at 9:30 a.m.
Bocek noted district participation in community fundraising (the Rotary spelling bee) and praised staff and students who assisted with community events. She also highlighted state-level assessment improvements, citing National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) gains for Louisiana fourth graders and urged celebration of statewide academic progress while acknowledging ongoing challenges in education.
The superintendent said staffing and transfer planning for next school year is underway and that district testing season begins soon; she encouraged board members to attend community events and support ongoing student programs.
