The General Committee on Feb. 11 reviewed a revision to school board policy JCDAE on student electronic devices and voted to forward the update to the full board with a recommendation to include a generic term for emerging wearables.
School board counsel and committee chair explained the revision responds to changes the State Department of Education made to Bulletin 741 following a legislative update. The bulletin additions require local policies to define an instructional day and to address specific device categories and restrictions. "They want us to make sure that we cover all the bases," the presenter said, noting the bulletin lists items labeled a, b, c, d and e that must appear in district policy.
Trustee Millie Harris proposed that the committee also add a reference to wearable video-capable devices, noting the growing popularity of head-mounted “smart glasses.” Committee members asked the administration to use a generic term rather than a brand name; the board attorney agreed to identify the appropriate generic descriptor and bring it to the full board. "I'll look up the generic name and I'll add that in by the next general meeting," the attorney said.
The committee approved the motion to send the revised JCDAE to the board with the suggested language change; the motion passed unanimously in committee (10-0). The administration will submit the updated policy to the State Department of Education by the March 1 deadline required in Bulletin 741.
