Pueblo County commissioners review nonprofit funding requests, question $14,000 signage grant

Pueblo County Board of County Commissioners members reviewed a slate of funding requests from local nonprofits and civic groups during a meeting when staff presented standardized application packets. Requests ranged from $500 to more than $14,000 and prompted debate over budget limits and the county’s role in supporting local organizations.

The county reviewed a $14,035.72 request from the Pueblo Historical Aircraft Society and the Pueblo Weisbrod Aircraft Museum to replace outdoor signage. Commissioners said the museum is an asset but raised concerns about the size of the request and the precedent a large one-time grant could set. Commissioners discussed asking for more documentation, negotiating with vendors, or seeking local vendors or donation options rather than approving a lump-sum payment from county funds.

The packet also included a $500 request from Miss Ag Her Culture for the pageant’s participation in a national event, a $1,000 community-partner request from the Greater Chamber of Commerce for its annual gala (a community-partner level that includes eight seats), a $2,500 sponsorship-level ask from the Boys & Girls Club of Pueblo County (with a standard table priced at $1,600 and individual tickets at $150), a $1,000 request from the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office for its annual awards dinner (last year…
