City Schools of Decatur presented the first-year results from its partnership with Communities In Schools (CIS), which places site coordinators in four district schools to provide case-managed supports and schoolwide activities.
Program model and scope: CIS site coordinators are embedded at Decatur High, Beacon Hill Middle and share a coordinator between Claremont and Talley elementary schools. Site coordinators run schoolwide programming (reading nights, family events) and provide case-managed support. CIS reports 169 students currently on caseload across participating schools; case-managed students receive an average of roughly three hours of support each week across academic and non-academic categories.
Funding and impact: City Schools of Decatur invested $195,000 in the partnership; CIS reported the total impact (grants, partner donations and emergency assistance) to date at $335,348. CIS has provided $30,225 in emergency assistance since spring of last year and anticipates additional emergency support expenses this semester.
Principal report: Claremont Elementary27s principal described CIS supports that included temporary housing assistance, transportation for families to events, resource navigation and staff supports. Principals reported satisfaction: all four principals said the CIS services had a positive impact and were satisfied with the level of case management and student advocacy.
Next steps: The district and CIS will continue the partnership in the coming school year and expand program alignment with school goals; the board was told staff will refine outcome reporting going forward.
