City Schools of Decatur principals who participated in the University of Virginia Partnership for Leaders in Education described how the program is reshaping instructional leadership and producing early improvements in student outcomes.
Program and school reports: Principals from Fifth Avenue Elementary, Talley Elementary, Beacon Hill Middle and Decatur High summarized that UVA provided leadership tools to clarify instructional priorities, strengthen data-driven instruction, standardize expectations for Tier 1 instruction and increase targeted feedback for teachers. Principals said their staff are using common summative assessment review protocols, tighter PLC practices and focused lesson planning.
Early results: Principals reported measurable gains in some schools: Talley and Beacon Hill showed gains in winter assessment data and met CCRPI closing-the-gap targets for subgroups in the recent assessment cycle. Decatur High noted that targeted instructional observation and monthly feedback cycles were part of a concerted plan to close gaps in EOC performance for Black, economically disadvantaged and students with disabilities.
Why it matters: UVA27s PLE combines business leadership techniques with evidence-based instructional strategies. The district27s leadership team said building principal capacity to lead instructional change is central to narrowing predictable achievement patterns.
Next steps: Principals and central staff will continue the 90-day improvement cycles, monitor summative assessments and return to the board with progress updates as UVA coaching continues.
