Marshfield council petitions state for airport improvements after public hearing

Marshfield held a public hearing and approved a resolution asking the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Aeronautics to consider state and federal funding for proposed improvements at Marshfield Municipal Airport.
Jeff Geier, airport manager for Marshfield Municipal Airport, spoke at the hearing and described an extensive list of potential projects the airport is seeking to include in a state/federal aid petition. The list included fuel-farm enhancements; land acquisition for runway approaches; wildlife site visits; rehabilitation and reconstruction of Runway 16/34; replacement and relocation of approach and taxiway lighting and electrical vault; removal of an old terminal building; construction of a snow-removal equipment building and hangar area; apron expansion; installation of alternative fueling facilities (including electric and hydrogen) and electric vehicle chargers; solar or other alternative energy installations; purchase of snow-removal equipment; and planning and environmental studies. "Now that sounds like a lot, and I just wanna say this is a wish list," Geier said, noting that the longer list is needed to qualify for state and federal planning and capital funds.
Geier told the council that, if federal and state aid are used for construction of certain projects, typical federal participation could be about 90% for eligible items with 5% state and 5% local match depending on the grant program, and cautioned that grant assurances mean the city must maintain the airport for a minimum period (he cited a 20-year requirement) or risk repayment obligations.
The council voted to approve Resolution 2025-07 petitioning the Wisconsin DOT (Bureau of Aeronautics) for state and federal aid for airport improvements. The motion (mover: Alderman O'Reilly; second: Alderman Giles) passed. The resolution and petition will allow the Bureau of Aeronautics to include Marshfield’s projects in state-level planning for FAA-distributed block-grant funds.
