Board proclaims February 2025 Black History Month, cites theme of labor and history

The Larimer County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation on Jan. 28 designating February 2025 as Black History Month and urging community celebration and education.
Commissioner Jody Shattuck McNally read the proclamation, which cites the month’s 2025 national theme, “African Americans and Labor,” and references the observance’s origins in 1926 with Dr. Carter G. Woodson. County staff said the county’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board reviewed the proclamation language and contributed to its development.
Commissioners offered brief remarks on the proclamation. Commissioner John Kefalas emphasized the need to learn from history and referenced local programs and CSU’s African American Cultural Center events. Commissioner Kristen Stevens quoted Ida B. Wells, noting the value of bringing truth to light and renewing the county’s commitment to equity. The board voted 3-0 to adopt the proclamation.
The proclamation text encouraged residents to visit the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (asalh.org) for more information and invited community organizations and institutions to mark the month with events and programs.
