Saline County approves $632,000 purchase of two motor graders

Saline County commissioners voted to buy two 2025 motor graders from Murphy Tractor for $632,000 and trade in two 2019 John Deere motor graders, officials said.
Darren Fischel, Road and Bridge administrator, told the commission sealed bids were opened Dec. 2, 2024, and two bids were received. Murphy Tractor bid $820,200 with a $189,200 trade allowance for a total cost of $632,000; Full Equipment bid $855,890 with a $197,000 trade allowance for a total of $658,890. Fischel said the county uses a total-cost bidding method to account for purchase price and maximum repair/maintenance costs.
The purchase will be paid from the Road and Bridge special machinery account, which had a balance of $1,987,242.96; after a $632,000 purchase the account balance would be $1,355,242.99, Fischel said. He recommended accepting the Murphy Tractor bid as the best value.
Commissioners asked about model comparability and expected service life. Fischel said both models meet specifications and that motor graders typically begin to “break over” and lose value around 8,000 hours; he did not recommend running machines to 10,000 hours. Commissioners also confirmed the two trade-in machines are in daily rural patrol use.
A motion to approve RFA 2025-03 as presented carried. The vote was recorded as in favor and the chair declared the motion carried.
The county will take delivery under the vendor’s terms and proceed with trade-in of the two 2019 John Deere graders, and staff may follow up on disposition of traded equipment if needed.
