Lake County Library spotlights Blair L. M. Kelley book, ZipBooks service and volunteer literacy training

Librarian Christopher Veach told the Lake County board that the library is promoting Blair L. M. Kelley’s Black Folk for Black History Month, reminding residents that the system offers ZipBooks (a California State Library–funded ordering service) and that a volunteer literacy tutor training will be held Feb. 20 at Lakeport Library.
Librarian Christopher Veach told the Lake County board on Zoom that the county library is highlighting Blair L. M. Kelley’s book Black Folk: The Roots of the Black Working Class for Black History Month and is promoting its ZipBooks ordering service and an upcoming volunteer literacy tutor training.
Veach said Black Folk, which won the 2024 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Book Award and the Philip Taft Labor History Award, “lets readers get to know people who lived a century ago or more” and is available in print and ebook through the Lake County Library system.
Veach described the library’s shared online catalog with Lake, Sonoma and Mendocino county library systems and explained how residents can request items free of charge and have them sent to their local branch for pickup. “Requesting items is completely free and items are sent to your local branch for you to pick up,” he said.
He also highlighted ZipBooks, saying the service is powered by a California State Library grant and allows the library to order a requested title and ship it directly to a patron’s address; the book is checked out to the patron and, once returned, becomes part of the library’s collection.
Veach announced a volunteer literacy tutor training scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 20, at Lakeport Library. He said the adult literacy program matches volunteer tutors with adult learners, requires no prior experience and provides ongoing support; residents can register by calling (707) 263-7633.
The library display for Black History Month includes additional authors and materials across branches in Lakeport, Clear Lake, Middletown and Upper Lake, and on the bookmobile. Veach directed listeners to library.lakecountyca.gov for more information.
A board member thanked Veach for the information. No members of the public on Zoom offered comments during the item.
