The Gilpin County Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution authorizing execution of an agreement for cooperative wildfire protection with the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC). County staff said the agreement clarifies mutual responsibilities for wildfire response, command-and-control transfer when incidents exceed local capacity, and funding arrangements for shared resources.
County staff described the agreement as complementary to existing annual operating plans (AOPs) the county maintains with the U.S. Forest Service and state park authorities and said DFPC maintains a local presence that supports rapid initial response. The resolution was amended during discussion to remove an incomplete placeholder paragraph in the draft and to state clearly that the board authorizes execution of the attached agreement.
Commissioners discussed operational details: the sheriff, who serves as county fire warden for legal purposes, explained that the county would attack fires aggressively and transfer authority to DFPC when a fire exceeded local resources. Commissioners noted the county’s dedicated emergency fund would provide initial seed money when state air resources or other high-cost assets are deployed.
Why it matters: the agreement formalizes coordinated wildfire response across federal, state and local agencies in a county where much land is federal or state-managed and where wildfire risk is a recurring regional concern.
Ending: The board approved the resolution 3-0 and staff will finalize the corrected resolution language for signature.
