Maas told commissioners his resignation will trigger a party caucus of registered Democrats to select a candidate for the governor’s approval to serve the remainder of the term. "My resignation letter will trigger a process by which the Democrats will caucus and select a candidate to be submitted to the governor," Maas said. He said the caucus meeting had been set and the paperwork would be delivered to the governor in time for approval before Feb. 1.
The commissioners emphasized ensuring continuity in the treasurer’s office. Commissioner Kevin Cook moved to acknowledge the resignation; Commissioner Aaron Mayes seconded the motion, which passed 3-0.
Maas, who said he has served as Shawnee County treasurer for 12 years, told the board it has been “my pleasure and privilege to serve.” He also cautioned that while the publicly elected successor (named in the election) is likely to be selected through the caucus, the statute allows the party caucus to nominate any eligible registered Democrat to fill the vacancy until the elected successor’s official start date in October.
No formal policy changes or interim appointments were made at the meeting; the board’s action was to acknowledge the resignation and allow the statutory replacement process to proceed.
