Public works reports road and bridge repairs, Cathedral Avenue award and heavy snow-response hours

Ellis County Public Works Director (as recorded) briefed the commission on completed roadway and bridge projects, a municipal concrete award and snow-response labor on Jan. 21.
The director said the second phase of the Cathedral Avenue reconstruction in Victoria (from Sixth Street to Old 40 Highway) was completed in 2024 and the project received a 2024 Municipal Concrete Award from the Kansas Aggregate Producers Association and the Ready Mixed Concrete/Contractors Association (CAPA/KRMCA). The director said the reconstruction improved clearance under a nearby railroad bridge and is expected to extend the pavement’s useful life.
County staff reported additional bridge work, including deck skim and overlay on the Vincent Crossing bridge and a separate bridge just outside Victoria; those projects were completed ahead of schedule. The director said doing the bridge and approach work together minimized community impact despite short-term closures.
In response to a recent winter storm, the county reported about 142 hours from Road & Bridge crews and 17 hours from the noxious-weed crew dedicated to snow removal on the event; some employees later flexed or took leave for hours worked, the director said.
Commissioners accepted the update and thanked public works crews for clearing roads and completing major projects.
No formal county action was requested during the presentation.
