Commission outlines three utility‑box mural candidates, budget and timing concerns remain

Commissioners reported progress on plans to wrap three utility boxes with artwork but said final designs and budgets must be settled before the commission commits resources.

Commissioner Sharon Clark Williams said the commission has three utility‑box projects under consideration: the box outside Roddy’s (the original proposal), a box tied to the Hart Hands (referred to in discussion as the Casey area/hart hands), and a box at Veterans Park. Sharon said she reviewed last year’s cost for a single box at North High: $1,800 for a single box that covered print/wrap work and staff photographic preparation; that figure did not include a separate artist fee. The group noted the need to determine whether the commission budget can cover three boxes or whether the commission should request partner contributions.

Commissioners said one box (the Veterans Park wrap) is a priority for completion ahead of an anniversary celebration in August. Sharon said she and Commissioner Laura Strang will meet to clarify budget allocations and finalize designs when health and timing permit. No formal vote was taken; commissioners cautioned against committing artists or materials until the commission confirms available funds. Commissioners also discussed that Roddy’s had not recently engaged about the project and remains in consideration but not confirmed.
