Lincoln Middle School students present 'Soka' club to district board

Students from Lincoln Middle School presented the Soka club to the Pullman Public Schools board Feb. 12, describing the group as a space for cultural exchange, peer support and community partnership.
Noor El Gattan told trustees, "Soka is a safe space where students can talk about their problems at school without a fear of being judged." Other student speakers said Soka helps learners explore heritage, build friendships and plan community events involving parents and partners.
Students thanked teachers and administrators who support the club and invited the board to encourage family and community involvement. Board members asked how often the group meets; students said weekly, sometimes more during busy periods. Trustee Lisa asked why few male students attended; Coach Green, a club advisor, said last year participation was near 50/50 but athletic schedules this year reduced boys' attendance and staff are trying different meeting times and snacks to be more accessible.
Principal Grove praised students for leadership and said the school will continue to support the club’s activities.
