Dickinson County staff report on jail space, IT cost savings, planning permit and training

During the Jan. 14 Dickinson County Commission meeting, staff provided brief operational updates that covered jail space planning, recent IT purchases that reduced costs, an upcoming Planning and Zoning hearing and county training schedules.

Jail space and operations: The presiding commissioner said he will spend an afternoon at the county detention center to address overcrowding and explore additional space; the county is using tracking bracelets as part of current operations while staff develop a larger project to add capacity.

IT and cost savings: Dustin Parks, the countye2s IT staff, described sourcing refurbished network switches through online vendors that reduced equipment costs. Commissioners said Parks acquired four switches for about $1,800 total, a significant savings compared with new-equipment pricing.

Planning, environmental and other staff items: The planning and zoning director noted a Planning Board meeting on Jan. 17 to consider a conditional-use permit for an event venue at 1245 Flag Road. Environmental Services staff will attend noxious-weed training Jan. 17 and a small-flows conference related to the countye2s small wastewater flows code. The emergency manager provided stop-the-bleed equipment to Abilene High School. County offices will be closed Jan. 20 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Officials also flagged that Tyler Technologies software is being tested for law enforcement dispatch and EMS functions; staff described the test as ongoing.

Context and next steps: Commissioners noted the updates were part of routine departmental reports. Several commissioners mentioned upcoming meetings and orientations, including new-commissioner orientation in Topeka and local-government day at the state Capitol, and said they would follow up on the detention center project and planning-board matters at later meetings.
