Dickinson County designates February 2025 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month

The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a proclamation designating February 2025 as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month after a presentation from Dalen Alexander, youth mentor advocate with EVAC.
Alexander read the text of the proclamation, citing figures included in the document: that one in three adolescents in the United States experiences physical, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner and that only 9 percent of teens in abusive relationships report the abuse to someone. The proclamation called for education about healthy relationships, recognition of warning signs, and support for services that assist victims.
Alexander described local prevention and outreach efforts, including work aimed at bringing relationship- and boundary-focused education into middle and high schools and teaching a curriculum called Safe Dates in high schools. He and the proclamation text also referenced the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas as a partner working in Dickinson County to assist victims and promote prevention.
A commissioner moved to approve the proclamation; another seconded the motion, and the board voted in favor. Commissioners signed the proclamation and county staff said they would provide the applicants with a copy of the signed document.
The proclamation record will be retained by county staff; the presenters asked the commission to help spread awareness and support services for teen victims in schools and community programs.
