The Dickinson County Commission on Jan. 23 approved the highway department’s recommendation to purchase a used 2015 Volvo motor grader from Foley, applying a $44,200 trade-in and yielding a net county outlay of roughly $42,700.
County staff said the current grader’s hydraulic system was weakening and that the machine has more than 10,000 hours of service. Highway staff told commissioners the department uses graders about 250 to 300 hours per year. Commissioners weighed repair costs against replacement and discussed leasing alternatives used by some townships before approving the purchase on a voice vote.
Staff recommended the 2015 Volvo as a used replacement rather than investing in major hydraulic repairs. The commission noted trade-in value and the age and hours on the existing machine when considering whether to repair or replace. A commissioner said a new machine would cost significantly more; staff mentioned prices in the range of a few hundred thousand dollars and referenced figures around $315,000 for new equipment.
The commission approved the motion to accept the Foley offer with the trade-in; the motion carried on a voice vote.
The purchase is intended to maintain highway department capacity for routine road maintenance; staff will follow the county’s procurement procedures to finalize the transaction.
