Calendar committee reviews multiple-year options, considers aligning breaks with WSU

The Pullman Public Schools calendar committee gave the board a status update Feb. 12 saying committee members — administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals and parents — have met once and will meet again in February and March to draft options through 2029.
Justin, who presented the update, said the committee is working within district policy to ensure calendars are published ahead of time and that the district meets the required 180 school days. He outlined parameters including a late‑August start (the district uses the last Wednesday in August), placement of conferences (fall for K–8, spring for elementary), three professional learning days and built‑in inclement‑weather makeup days.
"We know we've got to get a hundred and 80 days in," Justin said as he described the constraints. The committee will draft multiple calendar options and collect employee and family feedback; association votes on preferred calendars will then arrive to the board for a May recommendation and board vote.
Board members asked about aligning Pullman’s spring break with Washington State University’s calendar. Justin said alignment has been discussed and could happen partially — for example by aligning conference days or selected no‑school days — but that moving the district’s late‑August start date affects where spring break would fall.
The committee will present proposed calendar options and a summary of community input to the board following the remaining meetings.
