Board proclaims January 2025 National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month and National Stalking Awareness Month

The Dickinson County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 9 unanimously proclaimed January 2025 as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month and National Stalking Awareness Month, following a presentation by the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas (DVAC).
Jamie Shaw, identified in the meeting as a DVAC parent‑child advocate, presented the proclamations and described DVAC services in Dickinson County and surrounding counties. "We have a 30 minute response time to hospital" for victims seeking an advocate, Shaw said. "We have a 24/7 hotline, and we have an advocate on call 24/7. If you know somebody that's dealing with anything, you can call us. It's completely confidential."
Shaw outlined DVAC’s services including court advocacy, housing resources, referrals to Kansas Legal Services, parent‑child education and support for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, elder abuse and stalking. The proclamations noted federal and state data mentioned during the presentation and praised victim service providers, law enforcement and community partners.
A motion to approve both proclamations was made and seconded; commissioners voted in favor and the motions carried on voice votes.
Ending: The proclamations were signed by the chairman and staff noted photo opportunities would follow. DVAC representatives encouraged residents to contact the organization for confidential help and to raise public awareness.
