District reports KDE visit, curriculum survey results, facilities delays and maintenance workload

District staff previewed an upcoming Kentucky Department of Education visit, presented teacher survey results on new instructional materials, described 1-on-1 student scheduling and transition meetings, and gave a facilities report on construction delays, maintenance work orders and accessibility concerns at athletic events.
District instructional staff told the Franklin County Board of Education the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) will send its instructional team to observe the district on February 20 so KDE can calibrate its visit tool and study the district's K–5 implementation. The presenter said KDE singled out the district as an example during outreach to vendors and other districts.
Staff also reported results from a second-quarter teacher survey on newly adopted instructional resources. The presenter said 329 teachers responded of roughly 460 staff surveyed. The survey showed strong agreement for K–5 CKLA (ELA) implementation (about 83% agree/strongly agree) and unanimous agreement among Algebra 1 teachers about Desmos; middle-school math responses were more mixed and several teachers asked for more practice problems, which the district said is one reason for adopting the Magma Math supplemental program.
District staff invited board members to participate in 1-on-1 student scheduling sessions (training Feb. 19; scheduling events Feb. 26 and 27 at Western Hills and Franklin County/Elkhorn, respectively) and described transition meetings that coordinate student handoffs between feeder schools.
On facilities, staff gave a progress update on Western Hills construction work and other projects. The presenter said winter weather and unexpected plumbing issues in older foundations caused change orders and delays; an engineer reviewed the Franklin County High School wall crack and recommended an alternate remediation plan included in a $49,494 quote that the board approved. Facilities staff said the Western Hills auxiliary gym foundation, roof sections and plumbing are now visibly progressing and that additional small projects (press box work, new sound system, countertops at athletic facilities) are planned for spring and summer.
Maintenance workload figures presented: about 1,346 projects opened between July 1 and December, 1,375 projects closed in that period, and roughly 22 projects were still active at the December snapshot reported. Transportation staff reported receiving 10 bus driver applicants since December and hiring two substitute drivers; eight applicants applied for bus monitor positions.
A board member raised accessibility concerns after observing a student on crutches at a Western Hills game with no nearby handicap parking; staff acknowledged limited spots and said this will be monitored. Staff also reported roof and exhaust repairs after recent winter weather and that engineering checks confirmed a building's floor-to-ceiling measurements returned to expected ranges after melt and repairs.
The district's instructional and facilities updates were informational; no formal policy votes were taken on these informational items during the meeting.
