Students and staff used the meeting to highlight recent school events, celebrations and volunteer programs across the district.
Student advisory member Isabelle described No‑Go week activities at district schools, including themed days such as pajama day and twin day and other spirit activities at the high school. At the elementary level, teachers and students presented a kindergarten Lunar New Year program: kindergartners made dragons and lanterns, practiced using chopsticks and paraded through the school while older students cheered, staff said.
A kindergarten teacher, Robin Green, and student Jaylee described cutting paper shapes to make decorations and said the classes hung lanterns and high‑fived peers as they paraded down the hallway. The interim kindergarten principal described the event as a community celebration and tied it to the district’s DEI efforts to expose students to cultural traditions.
Representatives of VIPs, the nonprofit that supports volunteers in Falmouth Public Schools, presented an overview of programs and volunteer needs. VIPs’ presenters said the organization reports roughly 800 volunteers (a figure the presenters said is rebuilding following the COVID period) and encouraged community members to log volunteer hours for grant and reporting purposes. VIPs leaders said mentors are the program area with the biggest shortage, particularly for K‑12 mentoring programs that require a weekly commitment.
VIPs also described planned garden expansions at East Falmouth and Mullen Hall elementary schools and said they are pursuing grant funding and volunteer recruitment for spring and summer work. A public commenter who is a PTO garden volunteer also described plans to plant fruit trees and repair raised beds and said local businesses had pledged donations of plants and supplies.
Provenance: Student advisory remarks, kindergarten presentation and VIPs presentation took place in the meeting’s highlights and community presentation sections.
