The Falmouth School Committee received a first reading on proposed school‑choice seats for the 2025–26 school year. District staff recommended offering four seats in each grade from first through 11th grade, continuing the longstanding practice of not accepting choice students in 12th grade, and allowing unlimited kindergarten choice depending on available seats.
At the presentation district staff said this year’s incoming choice total of 45 new students was the highest number in five years; that figure contributed to a total of 84 choice students in the district this year. Staff also reported 57 students left the district in the same reporting period.
The district said the kindergarten number was comparatively high among the grades that saw incoming choice students this year. Staff explained the recommendation of four seats per grade was conservative and intended to avoid a situation in which accepting too many choice students would force the district to add classrooms or increase class sizes.
Committee members asked clarifying questions about how the seats were allocated by grade, sibling policies and whether the kindergarten timing and May public hearing date were consistent with past practice. Staff confirmed the public hearing would occur at the next meeting and that a vote would follow after the public hearing.
This was a first read; no committee vote was taken. The administration asked the public to attend the scheduled hearing when the committee returns the item for a vote.
