The Tyler City Council voted on Feb. 9 to name the currently unnamed t‑ball field at Fun Forest Park in honor of Reverend Ralph Carraway Sr., following a unanimous recommendation from the Parks Board and a request from the North Tyler Baseball and Girls Softball Association.
Stanley Traylor, president of the North Tyler Youth Baseball and Girls Softball Association, presented a written request and appeared in council chambers to urge the naming. Traylor said the proposal recognized Carraway’s years of service to youth sports and to the community. The Parks Board voted unanimously on Jan. 29 to recommend the name change.
Reverend Ralph Carraway Sr., introduced at the meeting, spoke briefly and thanked volunteers and coaches. Council members praised his service; the motion to name the field the Reverend Ralph Carraway Sr. Baseball Field was moved by Hawkins, seconded by McKellar, and carried by voice vote.
The request referenced the City of Tyler ordinance guidelines for naming park lands and park facilities (section 8-57-b-4), which allows naming parks in honor of living community leaders under the ordinance’s criteria. The council’s action on Feb. 9 completes the local naming step; facility signage and administrative steps will follow per Parks Department procedures.
