HUNTINGTON — During the Feb. 10 public‑comment period, resident and parent Josh Tube urged the Huntington Board of Education to adopt a resolution that would declare the district a safe zone for immigrant students and establish a rapid‑response team to prepare for instances in which a student might be separated from guardians.
Tube told the board that many district students come from immigrant families and said families are experiencing fear about immigration enforcement. He said he had asked the board by email to place a National Education Association model resolution on the agenda; he expressed disappointment it was not on the Feb. 10 agenda and asked the board to consider the measures, which include reaffirmation of student rights and asking the superintendent to report to the board on district compliance.
The speaker thanked the superintendent for providing a recent communication about state guidance and cited district policies by number — Policy 73‑30 (searches and interrogations) and Policy 72‑40 (student records) — as the frameworks the district follows, and he urged board action beyond minimum compliance. Tube closed by urging the board to consider the district’s moral obligation and to act on behalf of all children in the community.
The board and superintendent acknowledged the public comment and the superintendent noted the district’s existing policies and the intent of her earlier communication to provide families with aligned guidance; no board action or vote on Tube’s request was taken on Feb. 10.
