Commission adopts Coral Gables Economic Development Strategic Plan

The City Commission voted Feb. 11 to adopt the City of Coral Gables Economic Development Strategic Plan, a multi-phase document prepared with consultant support from Florida International University.
Belkis Perez of the city's Economic Development Department told the commission the plan was developed with community and stakeholder input, and that it aims to guide sustainable, resilient growth and to preserve downtown competitiveness. Dr. Ned Murray of FIU's Jorge M. Perez Metropolitan Center presented the competitive assessment and summarized several strategies, including economic diversification, place making, an innovation/design district, and targeted enhancements to commercial corridors.
The competitive assessment highlighted Coral Gables' strengths: a strong local brand, high educational attainment among residents, and a significant concentration of professional and global firms. The assessment also identified challenges: stagnant population growth, low labor-force participation relative to some peers, aging commercial corridors and housing affordability that affects younger workers.
The plan endorses a set of priority areas including a Design & Innovation District along Ponce de Leon Boulevard, targeted marketing and a performance dashboard to track outcomes. Dr. Murray emphasized implementation capacity and public'private partnerships as central to success, and recommended that the city empower the Economic Development Department and board to execute the plan.
Commissioners praised the plan's concision and emphasis on measurable outcomes; Mayor Lago asked that staff publish the plan on the city website and engage the public for feedback. The commission approved the resolution adopting the plan by roll-call vote.
