Students, coaches and district staff showcase Superintendent’s Cup; district cites community and partner support

Students from each elementary school demonstrated drills tied to the program’s core values. Fifth-grader Tessa (Corey School) described a passing drill used to teach cooperation; Jeremy Kim (Emery School) described warm-up exercises tied to perseverance; third-grade student Kamita (Gilbert School) demonstrated nonverbal communication drills; Pendleton and Whitaker students demonstrated fair play and teamwork drills.
PE coaches from across the district — identified in the presentation as Brandon Rizzi (Corey), Paul Kim (Emory), Greg Sorensen (Gilbert), Jeff Cruzley (Pendleton) and Mitch Bell (Whitaker) — described how the practices built skills beyond athletics, including restraint, encouragement and leadership. The district credited partners and sponsors including Kid Healthy, Buena Park High School for facility use, CalFresh and other local health/sponsorship groups, and noted media coverage from the Orange County Register.
Questions from the board included where referees were sourced; staff said Kid Healthy provided referees and some high-school volunteers assisted. The session ended with the board pausing for a short intermission for photos and autographs.
