Council adopts ordinance clarifying weed cutting and native landscaping rules

The Oshkosh Common Council on Feb. 11 approved Ordinance 02/1957 to amend municipal code sections 17.44 and 17.44.2 concerning weed cutting, lawn care and native landscaping areas.
Council member Flom asked for clarification about the ordinance’s language that excludes gardens, beds and foundation edging from the definition of native plant areas. Staff confirmed that native plant areas must be a designated area with an approved plan and that such areas cannot exceed 8 inches in height under the amended language.
The Sustainability Advisory Board recommended approval, and the ordinance passed on a roll call vote with Nichols, Larson, Eslinger, Flom and Buol voting aye (5‑0).
Council members described the change as housekeeping and said the ordinance balances native landscaping options with clear standards and an approval process overseen by the parks director.
