Representatives of Mount Hood Community College presented a bond proposal to the Troutdale City Council on Feb. 11, 2025, seeking the council’s public endorsement ahead of a May ballot measure.
John Hamlin, vice president of student development, and community partners described a $136 million bond package they said would modernize campus facilities, expand career and technical education, improve safety and accessibility, and invest in infrastructure. The presenters stated the bond would cost an estimated 25¢ per $1,000 of assessed value — roughly $5 per month for the average homeowner, according to the presenters’ consultant estimates — and that the measure would strengthen the local workforce pipeline for industries including health care, childcare and advanced manufacturing.
Speakers said the college already graduates locally relevant workers: last year they cited 236 health-care graduates, including 66 nurses, and other certificate and degree completions in cybersecurity, automotive and childcare programs. John Hamlin said the college serves as an economic engine estimated at roughly $350 million of annual impact in the region.
College representatives asked the council to endorse the bond and to return a signed form by roughly March 25, 2025. Councilors praised the college’s role in the community and said they would add the item to a future agenda (Feb. 25 or March 11) so the council can consider a formal endorsement.
