After on-court incident, RSU 04 board presses for stronger sportsmanship policy and penalties for spectators

Board members and athletic staff told RSU 04’s school board on Feb. 11 they want a stronger sportsmanship policy with enforceable penalties after a recent on-court incident at Oak Hill that several board members described as extreme.

"That's the most disgusting thing I've ever seen," board member Robbie said, calling for a policy that would allow meaningful penalties — including the possibility of a one-year ban — for parents or spectators who cross the line. Robbie urged the policy include clear penalties so athletic directors have board support when enforcing discipline.

Jim Palmer, the district’s adult education director and athletic director, said the district will pursue pregame announcements and other proactive measures and noted the district also received recognition this week: "We received the sportsmanship award," he said, pointing to a broader record of positive behavior despite the isolated incident.

Christy, speaking for the personnel/policy committee, said a sportsmanship policy (J G JJIBB) is being developed and will be brought to the full board. The committee acknowledged that because the district did not previously have a written sportsmanship policy it is drafting language now that will include expectations and sanctions.

Superintendent Katie and athletic staff said they are coordinating materials such as posters and pregame announcements to set expectations at events and to support athletic directors’ on-site decisions. Board members repeatedly urged that the policy include sufficient penalties to deter repeat incidents and to support staff who enforce rules.
