The Plymouth Village Water and Sewer District on Feb. 11 denied a sewer abatement request from a customer whose water heater burst while she was away and required the fire department to pump water from the basement.
Speaker 4 summarized the customer’s request, saying the incident produced only a small sewer charge—about $400—before an administrative fee, leaving approximately $300 due if the abatement were granted. Staff cautioned that district policy allows only one abatement per property lifetime and that approving a small abatement now could jeopardize the customer’s ability to pursue a larger abatement later.
Speaker 3 said the customer “completely understands” the limits and had submitted the request to preserve other avenues should the board deny the abatement. After discussion, Speaker 4 moved to deny the abatement request; Speaker 4 seconded the motion and the board voted aye.
Board members reiterated general winter plumbing precautions, including shutting off supply valves and maintaining home plumbing to reduce freeze or burst risk. Staff noted the district’s meter reading system can review usage data after the fact but not in real time for all meters; staff also said the district is piloting meter technologies that allow more frequent reads and leak monitoring for some accounts.
