Board approves East Middle School bathroom renovation under LTFM plan

The Shakopee Public Schools board approved a long-term facilities maintenance (LTFM) project to renovate bathrooms at East Middle School during its Feb. 10 meeting.
The district received multiple bids and recommended awarding the work to the low bidder, Deering Pearson Group. District staff said the bid process drew eight bidders and the low bid came in below the estimate. The board approved the project by voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the minutes.
"We had very good incentive bidding. We had 8 different bids come in," said Ed Zimat, buildings and grounds manager, describing competitive bidding and saying the low bid arrived under projected costs. Staff told the board the work would address deferred-maintenance needs and is funded from LTFM, a restricted fund for maintenance, health-and-safety and accessibility projects. The project is planned to start after school ends and be completed during the summer.
Why it matters: LTFM funds are restricted for building maintenance and cannot be used for classroom instruction or general supplies. Approving the East Middle School restroom renovation implements a previously approved facilities plan and uses the district's dedicated maintenance funding stream.
The board motion to approve the award was made and seconded; the chair called for the voice vote and the motion carried.
Ending: District staff told trustees they will proceed with contracting and coordinate construction timing to minimize impact on the school year.
